Overview

Through twists and turns and dead ends, follow the red thread.

The school is still closed due to the power outage, and with it being empty and everyone in your household being busy, you decide to use this opportunity to break into the Principal's Office to follow your lead from the end of A Perfect Framework. While you do still have the School Key that Jo gave you, you're not quite sure how to get into her office, so you call up Maxine to see if she's made progress. Upon doing so, she'll happily explain that she was just about to call you about a discovery she made and requests you meet her in the Forest Glade after dark.

Once night arrives, Maxine will appear and explain that she found a Locked Box in the walls of the Computer Classroom. She'll then entrust it in your possession, claiming that she's being watched by an unknown force. When you ask her about access to the Principal's Office, she'll happily lend you her key to it that she's had the whole time. On your way to the Admin Wing, you hear footsteps and hide from whoever it may be. You hear Mrs. L and the unknown person she's with talk about how there wasn't a blackout previously, possibly suggesting that "he" did something differently this time. Mrs. L will suggest she visit "him", with the other party quickly shooting it down. Confused, but with no time to think about it, enter the office and take the computer back home.

Upon getting back to the Kitchen, Flora and Maya will confront you about your whereabouts and what you're holding. You'll explain that you're trying to solve the mystery of the thefts and need Maya's help in breaking into the computer. After a few unsuccessful guesses at the password, Flora will get bored and leave. An hour of trying later, Maya requests you get her a milkshake to help her work better. Hoping Tam's is still open, you head out.

You arrive to the pancake brothel and are shocked to see Jacklyn eating alone and wearing a lab coat. You approach and talk to her and are left confused as she speaks posh and professionally rather than in her usual vulgar and metaphoric way. Assuming her to be messing with you or on drugs, you leave her be and go to get a milkshake from the counter. If you don't have the $5 for one, Jacklyn will buy the treat for you and you'll be on your way. Otherwise, upon purchasing the shake, the cheerleaders will enter the establishment and start mocking you. You get yourself out of their hair one way or another and return back home.

By the time you return to your room, Maya will have cracked the password and start explaining some of the things she found on the computer. No breaches could be found and it was logged in on the first attempt, so she suspects whoever hacked her phone did it by logging in the computer rather than hacking in. Nothing else seems of value except for some random letters in the terminal. You suggest Maya try typing them herself, and it opens up a chat box with someone named "boe@newfallhigh". You and Maya try talking to the person, and they reveal that whoever they think you are was not supposed to contact them again. After suggesting that "boe" might be the board of education, Maya leaves for a nap, leaving you to ponder the questions you now are asking, including if she's got the right idea about that nap.

It's all coming together now, right? Right?

Missable Interactions

  • When contemplating at the start of the quest, you'll believe that whichever girl (other than Maxine) has the highest Love stat wouldn't want you to obsess over this situation.
  • If you don't have Maxine's number at the start of the quest, you'll have to find it in the Phone Book in the Detention Classroom before you can progress.
  • When Maxine arrives in the Forest Glade, she'll ask you if you're aware that stomping around makes you easy prey.
    • Asking what you'd be prey for will have her list creatures such as wood cobblers, mutated ducks, and sabertooth turtles.
    • Explaining that you're trying to draw out predators will have Maxine claim that you're not capable of defending yourself from the beasts. You dismiss her claim, but she backs it up with recorded data from all throughout your school career, such as:
      1. Spinach attacking your foot in 7th grade and you "screaming like a little bitch".
      2. A mosquito getting the best of you 3 nights in a row in 10th grade.
      3. Getting constricted and choked out by a garden hose, screaming "Help, this thing is going to devour me whole! Please, please, I'm not pretending!"
      4. Losing a screaming match to a beaver.
      5. Mistaking a human girl for a cat.
      6. "Nearly drowning in a kiddie pool" if you completed Poolside Story.
      7. "Somehow getting lost in the company of a professional guide cat" if you completed Search & Rescue.
      8. "Foolishly growing and mutating a tiny tree" if you completed Tiny Thirsty Tree.
    • If you ask what you can do better, she suggests wearing a ghillie suit and being quieter, as well as smearing dung on yourself to mask your scent.
      • When you ask why she's not doing these things, she simply remarks that she's a better outdoorsman.
  • If you hadn't found a Locked Box in Buried Truths or The Dive previously, you'll be confused why Maxine is so excited about this new one she found. Otherwise, you'll share her excitement and intrigue.
  • If you found a Locked Box previously and had opened it, you'll recall this when Maxine is explaining how many you've both found so far.
  • When you arrive home and Flora and Maya ask what you've been up to:
    • Telling Flora to kick rocks will subtract 1 Love point from her while giving Maya 1 as you two playfully flirt.
    • Saying you just went for a stroll will have them not buy it since you're carrying a school computer.
    • If you have 15 Charisma, you can say you're fighting criminals at night and need to bring this computer back to the Batcave.
      • If your room is dirty, Flora will suggest that you probably actually do have bats in your room.
      • If your room is clean, Maya will ask if you hang upside down in there, to which you explain you kiss like Spider-Man. Both girls will gain 1 Lust point.
  • When you playfully ask Maya if she's talking about plugging in the computer or her tail, Flora will ask what you mean had you completed Table Manners. Maya will claim not to know what you're talking about.
    • If you have the Cat Tail in your inventory, you can offer to show Flora. Maya will be uncharacteristically scared and beg you not to. You'll eventually convince Flora that you meant a tale about a naughty cat in the bathroom, giving Maya 2 Lust points.
    • If you returned the Cat Tail to her previously, you can suggest she show Flora by lifting up her dress. Flora will lose 1 Love point at your suggestion.
    • If you drop the subject or didn't complete Table Manners, both girls will call you a weirdo.
  • If you completed A Single Moment, you'll insist that the computer's password is "password", but Maya insists it isn't, suggesting that Jo changed it.
  • If you don't have the money for a milkshake, Jacklyn will buy one for you, believing that you should enjoy a treat. This will cause you to miss the cheerleaders' appearance.
  • When the cheerleaders arrive and start mocking you, there are three ways to get out of it.
    • Saying nothing will cause them to threaten to take your milkshake and throw you off the harbor, but Jacklyn will slap all three of them and tell them to back off, which they do.
    • If you have $500, you can challenge them to a pole-dancing competition. They'll agree and put on a show in the middle of the restaurant, with you making the $500 rain on them and forfeiting the challenge now that you got what you wanted.
    • Calling them all losers will cause you to get fed up with them and splash the milkshake on them. They'll scream and panic, and you snap a photo of the them before bolting out of there.
      • You'll be given 1 Lust and 1 Strength point as a result.
  • If you successfully returned with the milkshake, Maya will gain 2 Love points as she thanks you.
    • If not, she'll earn 2 Lust points as you show her the photo of the cheerleaders.
