Spinach is Maxine's beloved pet cat. While pets aren't ordinarily allowed in Newfall High[1], Spinach seems to be the exception for an unknown reason.
Appearance
Spinach is a black cat with green eyes, with no other notable and distinguishable features.
Personality
Spinach is very loyal to her owner, a feeling that is mutual for Maxine, but she's willing to betray that bond if she believes it to be for the greater good.[2] Spinach doesn't seem to mind too much, though, as long as she has a place to sleep and a ball of yarn to play with. She's also good at tracking scents, a skill that has helped MC on a few occasions and dubbed her "Detective Spinach" by Maxine.

- Maxine found Spinach in a shoebox outside of the school during her freshman year.[3]
- However, The End of the Maze has Maxine claiming that Spinach bit MC in 7th grade, creating a continuity error.
- Spinach regularly hisses at Mrs. L, an unusual behavior for the otherwise-sweet cat.[4]
- She also doesn't like Kate, either, hissing at her during Search & Rescue. Kate seems legitimately heartbroken by this.
- Spinach is the only non-human character who can be flirted with.
